INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGY ASSOCIATION NETWORK
GENEALOGY CONFERENCE
HELPFUL HINTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Revised 7 March 1995
Echo Tag : IGA_GENEALOGY
Co-Moderators: Jennifer Schmidt (440:113/50)
Jack Williams (440:113/1)
In order to aid echo participants (both novices and experts
alike), we've compiled the below list of "Helpful Hints" when
posting in this conference. These are not rules per se, merely
suggested etiquette to follow when posting in this echo. Be sure
to let us know if you have any other suggestions to be added to
the list!
1. Post! Many genealogists, new to bulletin board systems, are
somewhat afraid to jump into the action for fear of breaking a
rule. As long as your messages are friendly and related to
genealogy, odds are you have nothing to fear! The moderators of
this conference strive to help all novices, both to genealogy and
to BBSing, as best we can.
2. Be helpful. If you think you can help someone, PLEASE DO.
The favor may be returned in the future. :-)
3. Do not enter a message in all capital letters. This is
considered "shouting" on the echo. Conversely, a message in all
lower-case is considered to be "whispering".
4. Enter surnames (last names) in all capital letters in both
the subject line and the body of your message - for example,
George WASHINGTON. However, when signing your own name or
referring to someone in a non-genealogical context, normal
capitalization is used.
5. Subject lines should be as descriptive as possible. For
example, "WAGNER - WI" or "NC Land Records" is much more
descriptive than "Need Help" or "Genealogy". It is also
recommended that "Re:" not be used as some people sort on subject
lines.
6. Limit quoting to only those portions of the message necessary
to emphasize your reply. It is rarely necessary to quote an
entire message.
7. Although "thank you" notes are a form of good manners, they
are more appropriately sent via netmail or U.S. "snail" mail.
8. Subject lines should be kept current. In the course of a
discussion, the topic may wander from ALEXANDER ancestors to
church records - be sure the subject line reflects the message
content for every message you enter.
9. The moderators may take part in the discussions on this echo
without necessarily acting in any official capacity, unless the
message is signed as "IGA_GENEALOGY Co-Moderator" (format may
vary).
10. Messages should be concise, while presenting just enough
information to specifically identify what it is you are looking
for. Rather than saying you are looking for all JOHNSONs, say
that you are looking for further information on Henry JOHNSON who
was born 4 Mar 1872 in Polk Co., IA.
11. Despite many messages carrying a single recipient's name, all
messages posted here are available for all to read. Do not
hesitate to answer a message to someone else if you think you can
be helpful. Likewise, don't be surprised if several people
comment on your post to a single individual. This is a public
forum.
12. Last, but certainly not least, follow the golden rule -
treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.
Genealogy BBSing can be a wonderfully fun hobby. You'll
certainly get more out of it though by putting more into it -
namely, posting messages about the families you are researching,
sharing research tips, asking genealogical questions, and
replying to messages. We hope that you enjoy your time here!
